Table for one come with me Your waiter Tyler will be right over Welcome what can I get you? What Look I don’t know what you’re trying to say, but I don’t have time for this It happens more often than you know The deaf and hard of hearing at the receiving end of hurtful looks and comments this incident caught on camera It’s against company policy. I can’t do it. A deaf customer typed his order onto his phone at the drive-thru of an Ohio fast-food restaurant But the worker wouldn’t take it and ignored the customer The employee was fired and Taco Bell released a statement saying they are committed to maintaining an environment free of discrimination or harassment I Cannot help you. You see a man being discriminated against because he’s deaf Aren’t you supposed to have an interpreter here or something? What would you do? We’ve set up our hidden cameras at the Tom Sawyer diner and joining us to take in the action is nyle DiMarco He’s a model actor champion of Dancing with the Stars He’s also a deaf advocate He’s here on set with his interpreter our waiter Tyler is listening to producer instructions by earpiece and were communicating with JW the deaf actor playing the customer via text message. What are you hoping we’ll see from people today? I’m hoping that people won’t just stand by. I’m hoping that people won’t be bystanders We’re rolling Hey, how you doing? I’m gonna get you I Don’t know. I don’t know you’re trying to say I Have you experienced this kind of discrimination yourself personally? Sure. I think it’s a lot worse knowing that my entire family is deaf all of us being deaf if we go out to restaurant often waiters are Completely petrified. They’re not sure what to do with us. You can see kind of in their eyes their world collapsed I guess they see us. I’m trying to figure out how to communicate with us Man, I don’t have time for this This first diner overhears the drama right away. She’s noticing already. It’s not my job, are you waiting on people what’s going on? Just I got a full dining room over there. Oh, okay You don’t treat people that way. She’s out of her seat approaching our actor playing the manager is everything okay? Miss he was just so rude to this man who’s deaf, but this is my job. Whatever. What the hell is he doing here? I’m so sorry miss. I’m sorry by all means disappear In the middle of the action the diners friend joins in sent Barry away But our waiter he hasn’t learned his lesson. I don’t know. I just don’t understand why You had to talk to my manager about that turns out she is perfectly qualified to teach him. Okay? I’m a professor of communication skills. You have none So I felt I had to say something for you You have things to do. So do we all okay All right, you can walk away and now have JW banker go over there and shake her hand and thank her Okay, let’s go break it We step in to say thank you as well John with what would you do the TV show is an actor This young man is Nyle I’m Nyle. He’s interpreting for now. Okay. I absolutely love everything about your oddity today and your approach I mean my faith in humanity has been completely restored Tell us why did you step in? a Long well-respected professor of communications And I teach speech today’s my last day. I’m retired Wow One final lecture on her last day on the job Could I get you? What I what are you saying to me right now We’re at it again Okay, well you should have somebody with him to like help That’s not my job though and when Tyler makes it clear he isn’t willing to help This diner offers JW her assistance, he’s helping him he wants a crab cake slider. This isn’t your job either I have compassion like he wants to eat this food that Tigers say you write it down. I’m out of here Okay. Well then here you can write it down Okay, you can write it down Another customer choosing to alert the manager about our wicked waiter Doing absolutely everything ready Please please so bothered by what she’s seeing. She’s threatening to leave I’m so sorry. Please don’t please don’t get upset. Don’t get upset. He’s treating this man. Like he’s not a human being This is a person sitting here. He has a disability. There’s no reason to treat anyone like this time for us to step in I just can’t believe someone would treat someone else like this It’s just craziness Honestly, thank you so much Absolutely. Thank you for standing up Austin we’ll go out to eat and servers will treat us really rudely and be Condescending to us and it’s really great that you got involved Don’t you think that these people should be traveling with people not alone This next diner agrees with some of what Tyler is saying But maybe not his approach I don’t think I was being unkind And if she was deaf It’s not really our job to bring everyone some sort You know pen and paper now with these have cell phones in the way that we carry them everywhere It’s much easier to be able to text back and forth. I’m very relieved and thankful for technology for that reason She does try to offer some assistance I don’t have a pen. I’ve left it over there You got a pen. Yeah, great She if he could hear us she’s getting you a penny And when JW tries to return her pen We step in good morning ladies, I’m John what would you do? Well, we try to see what people would do when they witness that kind of ugly treatment of someone whose deaf Pretty ugly but he also wasn’t very prepared was he you mentioned that yeah, what did you mean? Bring the pig with you or something, right what you want we bring in Nyle to talk to Right what the back of Now we’re changing things up slightly Would you like to go in and play the actor yourself? I think it’d be fun. I’d absolutely love to Give me a baseball cap and I’ll head on in Nyle at the center of the scene these specials specials This full menu I’ve you’ve got some money. I don’t have anything on me. I got a pen And Right away. These nearby diners are trying to help Tyler Communicate with him. I’m not playing charades with you right now What else do you want? Cuz I’m doing my job You watch the water hide that what I I need it quick please and when Tyler walks away She has a choice word for him that Nyle fully understands Our Wieder is back Wasting my time. You want a salad with it? And once again, she’s up out of her seat Have Tyler kick him out. This is taking up way too much time. Just go somewhere else where they understand you Go somewhere else. Get out of here. You need to leave. Yes. Can I have my pen back, please? Thank you instead of arguing She gets the manager. Can I help you? Yeah That waiter is very rude. First of all, he told him to leave that he’s not playing charades with him It was awful and she does what our waiter had a problem doing all day wants water He wants a grilled chicken sandwich, and it comes with a salad and he wants the salad proving Just how easy it is to communicate. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it Time to say hello This really happens in real life and he really is deaf This is now the Marco he won Dancing with the Stars in America’s Top Model. I Would never treat anybody like that and I’ll never let anybody do that to anybody around me We rolled one last time JW is back in the hot seat. I Cannot help you with this, okay? Can I help you? 1. Its the servers job to be able to communicate with anyone especially a disabled person. Did that for 20 years that old lady who said the deaf person should be prepared she wont want to hear what i have to say.

  2. I work at Burger King. Every day there is one customer and he is deaf, coming there after job probably. He always type on phone and show me order but since he is coming every day I remember what he eat, and sometimes I do all for him before he show me his phone. He is very happy and we give him always good and professional service. That's why he is coming probably often.
That's how people has to be.
    Location: Norway.

  3. Have been watching this video all the way from the Philippines. Your videos are literally empowering. Keep on teaching and conveying everyone how morals could keep humanity intact.

  4. I’m deaf myself and This is so inspiring. One time I went to the store fully capable with my brother who knew sign language and a the employee was really kind but an other customer there kept calling me a retarded loser.I cried that whole day. I’m just happy to see that there are still nice people in this world.

  5. The white haired lady is so ignorant. I mean it’s our job who are hearing to be able to atleast try to understand those who are deaf.

  6. So sick of this happening, the deaf want to order food like anyone else and should be treated like anyone else. I love this show

  7. People, stop hating on 'the white haired woman.' She disagreed with the unkind treatment, all she said was for the deaf customer to be prepared, and she's right, a deaf person shouldn't expect someone to understand sign language.

  8. Hmmmmmm

I’d right down can you read. And then like idk a simple sign everyone knows like a high five or something for a yes. And don’t answer if you can’t just an idea

  9. Just today I got to watch this program; I loved it very much. I have watched more than 5 episoides and continuing. Love from Nepal. I really appreciate this program.

  10. i remember when my friend and i were younger, there was a deaf girl in her neighborhood. she was tall, years older than us, and had the prettiest braids. would go outside with her, but we didn’t know she was deaf, back then my friend and i weren’t really aware. we became really close with her, and we bought her gifts, and went to her house. her mom opened the door, and informed us she’s deaf, we were shocked but acted like we knew. she thanked us, and was so happy we were patient with her, and were nice to her. after that, we went back to my friends house, and tried to learn sign language. it’s that easy to be kind to people, and it feels way better, trust me.

  11. Unfortunately proof these videos are fake, at 6.08 the woman is shouting and the table at the back is just carrying on as normal.

  12. I have worked in restaurants for 20 years abd have had numerous customers over the years whobis deaf, or mute. Its as simple as a pen and paper. I keep it nearby for any time someone like this comes in.

  13. I had a guy that used to come in to the gas station I worked at that was deaf. He would motion like he was writing and I would grab a piece of paper and a pen. He'd write what he needed, I'd clearly say the total (he could read lips), he'd pay and that was that. There were a couple of cashier's over the 8 years I worked there that were rude to him, sighing and just not saying anything to him. I told them if I ever saw them doing that shit again, I'd make sure they were fired. I started mentioning during training "that's Brian. He's deaf. He may do this… He needs paper. Don't be a dick to Brian because he's a sweet angel. I'll make your life hell if you make fun of him."

Also, I just heard a story about a deaf woman at Jack in the Box. She sat in the drivethru for 2 hours because the dickhead cashier wouldn't let her order at the window. She could speak, she just had to order at the window so she could read his lips.

  14. I'm from the UK and I came across this channel and wanted to say well done to thease ppl who stick up for others and to the ppl who created this channel to bring awareness that we should all be treated with respect thank you I hope they do a similar channel like this in the UK well-done again.

  15. This is easy. The customer points to the food, you write it down. Bring water – all waiters bring water with every meal, even if you ordered a drink. Or, get your phone out and let them type out their order! It's that simple.

  16. Once I found a $20 on the floor in Walmart and I felt like John is gonna pop up behind me with the cameras.

  17. Karen, thank goodness you don't have a hearing or speech imparement, but are and life can happen at any time. Your lack of compassion is heart breaking, and I hope that compassion is a skill you learn before you have to learn it the hard way. Ablest behavior is the biggest problem that those who face adversity deal with every day. Karen, you are a big part of the problem.

  18. 11:40 Peter Griffin voice "I love when they say the name of a show in the show!"

If you don't know that episode I'm sorry and I feel stupid.

  19. I can’t believe the white hair lady said that i dead ass can’t . Just knowing that she’s not an actor hurts my heart .. that’s real people that others have to encounter themselves with I’m so pissed

  20. This show encourages me to be kind to everyone, everywhere, everyday, because of these beautiful people who step in every episodes.

  21. I know sign language. And I’ll never forget when a deaf woman and man came into a restaurant I worked at. They were trying so hard to order a meal, thinking I didn’t know sign language. When I started to sign to them they seemed so shocked and relieved…. and happy. People don’t understand how much this does happen and how exhausting it is for people to deal with.

  22. The white haired lady said "you're right it's not your job" UHM????? I have been waitress for 8 years & it is very much so my job tp HELP THE CUSTOMER, to ALWAYS have a pen, & something to write on. if he is my table he is my responsibility 100%, deaf, blind, both, handicap, black, white, brown, purple, blue, old, young, ANYTHING its my JOB to help him with any & everything that he needs. no matter what, if i can not understand him, i try my hardest to figure out a way to communicate, like pen & paper, or him pointing to what he wants on the menu, anything, if none of that works i try to find someone who can understand the person or can help in some way. even if you aren't the waitress/waiter, anything you should still help someone. its part of being human, exactly like the man at the end said, "What if it was you? Or your father or mother???" you would do whatever is needed to make sure they get what they want & need. so why should it be any different with a stranger? unless this stranger is being rude or something, you should always help, cause you could need help one day & karma is a real bitch, so if you wanna be a piece of shit & not help anyone, then karma will bite you in the ass when you need help & show you how it feels!!! It truly amazes me how shitty people were raised.
