  1. It is an interesting lecture in so far as it shows that cholesterol is not the whole story to heart disease (rather convincingly). It's also troubling how scientists with an agenda can bend their results to go their way.

    But he makes a bunch of leaps regarding other questions which I cannot be satisfied with.

    1. Assuming cholesterol is not responsible for heart disease, that still does not vindicate saturated fat, which may operate through many other pathways. No word on that.
    2. The underlying message seems to be that food sources of saturated fat are healthy – that does not follow from the presentation at all.
    3. Blood clotting factors are involved in heart disease – what causes their increase?
    4. No details on what the 'high carb diet' he was referring to includes. Composition matters. You will find virtually nobody that would argue that a refined carbohydrate diet is healthful.

    That being said – keep it coming. These kinds of talk are constructive additions to the nutrition debate. I would like to see some plant-based advocates protecting their case as well (as far as I can tell, there were none who gave talks or were hosted on podcasts)

  3. MIT Senior Research Scientist Dr. Stephanie Seneff talks about cholesterol and how SULFUR and SUNSHINE prevent cholesterol from building up in the arteries. She, too, concurs that we NEED CHLOESTEROL and lots of it. She has many talks on cholesterol, but this short one explains WHY and HOW sulfur prevents cholesterol 'problems'. Abnormal clotting in the blood can be addressed with nattokinaise, an enzyme derived from the Japanese food natto which reduces platelet clumping in the blood.   4. Americans are told not to eat fat but they do eat fat in the form of fast food and processed food and that is why they are fat. How much fat is in a Big Mac, with French fries or a Double Cheeseburger? I am sure low income people are fatter than anyone in America because all that is available for them to eat is fat laden fast food. Just because people are told what to do and what to eat does not mean that they do it.

  6. One of the mechanisms that causes atherosclerosis is haemodynamic stress on the arteries (veins don't get atherosclerosis). Basically the high pressure of the blood puts a mechanical strain on the arteries and if the arteries are not supple enough they can crack, and then the cholesterol rushes in to 'spackle' the crack. Guess what leads to stiff arteries?

    Hyperinsulinemia. Basically being insulin resistant and eating a high GI high carb diet causes atherosclerosis. Calcification makes the arteries stiffer and more prone to damage under pressure.

I feel Dr. Diamond displays his personal bias right at the beginning of his lecture when he says he'd rather die of disease while enjoying life eating delicious meat, bacon etc than live an unhappy life eating yucky terrible tasting plant based foods. For a supposed unbiased scientist to start his lecture displaying a strong and unfounded personal bias about his subject leaves me with great doubt about the validity of his views. I feel he also used a bit of sleight of hand on several occasions. It seems to me that he eats and was helped by an almost zero carb ketogenic diet but doesn't really give that detail too much in his lecture. To me he made it seem as though there is no worry about just eating a lot of saturated animal fat in your diet without severely restricting all carbohydrate intake (ie forcing your body into ketosis). The standard American already eats a diet loaded with saturated animal fats and cholesterol, while experiencing very high levels of preventable disease. This is very different from a very restrictive ketogenic diet where almost no carbs are allowed. I feel that by failing to emphasize the specifics of his particular diet regimen that allows him to consume large amounts of saturated fats and not experience health problems, he leaves the audience with the wrong impression. He also doesn't give specifics of other diets he tried that failed for him. Did he just avoid animal foods but eat processed refined carbohydrate foods? Did he eat mostly whole fruits and vegetables? We don't know. The speaker also disparaged the work of Dr. Ornish claiming that his studies modified many lifestyle variables at the same time, then claimed all of the health benefits were due to the dietary changes they made. That is not what I found when I read many of the study results by Dr. Ornish and his coauthors. The studies I read quantified the improvements found with each lifestyle intervention separately. I did read a few studies by Ornish that looked at the combined effect of lifestyle and diet, but they seemed to conclude to me that results were attributed to diet AND lifestyle together. That's just what I read. I also felt this lecturer spent an excessive amount of time disparaging medical institutions and talking too long about the difference between absolute and relative risk reduction. From my understanding, the disease process that leads to a heart attack is very long term (ie 20 to 30 years) and cumulative, thus an absolute risk reduction of 1% in the first year of a study on statins could be significant as that reduction would continue to compound over a long period of time to be a more significant in 10 to 20 years. I don't understand why the speaker didn't mention this. Finally, I do agree that we deal with the effects of financial and personal bias at times in medical studies and recommendations made by medical institutes, but in my opinion the speaker himself displayed his own personal bias that meat is wonderful and delicious and he stated clearly at the beginning of his talk that he felt life on a plant based diet simply wasn't worth living. I just have a very hard time believing that our entire medical establishment is so crooked and/or ignorant that they recommend harmful things to the public based totally on one study done a long time ago that was clearly flawed and performed by someone who wasn't even from the medical field. I personally know many fine physicians, and just find it hard to believe that such a large area of medicine would be based on such overtly flawed studies. In this follow up lecture I was hoping Dr. Diamond would cover some new material, but to me it seemed he covered mostly what he covered in the original lecture. This left me uninspired and wanting more information on this subject, not just the authors views on the state of our medical institutions. Please return and do a more detailed lecture as this speaker does have some very interesting topics to share. I do appreciate Dr. Diamond's unique and thought provoking ideas, as dissent is the foundation of good science. He clearly is willing to dig into data to fact check our current beliefs which is a wonderful thing.

Corporations are setup to win at all costs without emotion. The only thing we can do, is to properly inform ourselves and understand that their interested don't often aline with ours. Eat a diet based on plenty of leafy green fibrous vegetables, minimize sugar in all forms, and increase your healthy fat intake – combination of saturated and mono-saturated fats (if you're vegan/vegetarian, then use coconut oil and avocados) and stay away from polyunsaturated fats. That's what I've gathered.

I just don't know who to believe anymore… I'm a med student and we have textbooks and all of our professors of cardiology telling us that cholesterol (or actually LDL-c) causes coronary artery disease (CAD) and that statins are a MUST (because even though they have side effects, they decrease mortality). On the other hand, you have everyone who has ever been on statins or who has ever read a strongly worded Facebook article about statins saying that they are the devil and that doctors just want to make money from the pharmaceutical companies. This is different to the ignorance spread about vaccines, however, because all good doctors will agree that vaccines are good, but now there are lots of doctors swearing on their lives that the American Heart Association is wrong and lying to the public about cholesterol and statins and that makes it difficult to decide who is right. Well I honestly just want to learn what will be best for my patients one day and it would be awfully nice if there could be some objective medical consensus as to what prevents CAD and myocardial infarcts.   19. This continual war between high carb/low carb camps must be wonderful to those who want to divert attention from the real issues. Haven't we learned from history that we are always manipulated into choosing one of two camps and don't they fully support both sides of a phoney debate. You can watch presentations from both sides and be convinced because neither side wants to address their own shortcomings. Yet when you look at some of the consistencies between both sides, you start to understand where our energy needs to be focused, and that is the unnatural chemical, biological and genetic interference in all food production as well as the corruption that leads to profit from suffering and death. And they are still getting away with it all whilst we argue low or high carbs/fat.

  20. Yes, the problems is with the bread. For 20 years, I threw away the egg yolks, took margarine instead of butter, avoided fatty cuts of meat, etc. I also took statins for 10 years. Sugar and carbohydrate is what causes inflammation in the endothelium of the arteries. Cholesterol is there just to repair the damage.

  21. Shouldn't the list of clotting factors mentioned here include HsCRP, homocysteine and Lipoprotein(a)? The high sensitivity C reactive protein is a marker for systemic inflammation, homocysteine is related (maybe not causative though?) to coagulation and a high level of Lipoprotein (little a) is associated with a higher risk of clotting. I understand that much of this can be reduced with simple supplements like Niacin (B3) and other B vitamins in addition to stress reduction, exercise and proper diet. It should be a crime that people are led to believe that these chemical medications will save them from a crappy lifestyle!

  22. Fantasti talk but I personally dislike how he quickly brushes on that "maybe some scientists are getting paid to say what they they do" and then he just drops it without any real example. Even though the scientific field is very vulnerable because of it's heavy dependence on huge resources to do research I think that type of comment spreads a skepticism towards science that is detrimental and damaging to the field and that contributes to a type of anti-intellectual movement that's going around in which I don't want any part. That type of generalised remark about some scientist somewhere who's maybe taking money may very well include the speaker himself….

  25. I have to disagree with the criticism of statistics here. If 400 people die of CHD on placebo and 300 die of CHD on the drug, the drug reduces CHD death by 25%. It does not matter what the non death numbers are. He is arguing that the drug effect doesn't matter because so few people die of CHD. That is like saying that millions of people drive every day without accident so people should not worry about wearing seat belts.

  26. I took high dose stains for over 15 years after a bout with angina and 3 stents. Now I can hardly walk without extreme debilitating pain in my muscles and joints. They said it was my spine and operated twice. I kept getting worse with the doctors ignoring my cry for help. Now they say it is osteoarthritis. Finally I refused to take anymore statins (recently prescribed Crestor by my cardiologist). The doctors refuse to provide adequate pain meds even though it is their fault I am suffering because they are afraid of the DEA. Nobody should take statins. By the way, the statins did not prevent me from having two more stents then a bypass.

I ALWAYS emphasized students look at the Y-scale when representing and /or analyzing data. One of my "wisdom sayings" in my room was: "It's easy to lie with math, but it's easier without it".

Your comparison of fat in the blood plasma after eating a high fat meal and high carb meal was an eye opener because it was the high fat meal blood plasma that was presented in many videos by the WFPB diet gurus as the one that had the fat in the blood.   30. I'm very confused. Vitamin K2 is in Natto and supports clean arteries. But, when you buy Natto supplements they have the vitamin K removed because it states it assists in clotting. Clotting is what we are trying to steer away (why we buy Natto) from unless we are bleeding. So, we want non-sticky blood as the doctor says…..but, we also want K2 (mk-4, mk-7). What part am I not understanding?

  33. There are 2 concerns: the person and the planet. Low carb is best for the person, high-plants is by far better for the planet. I can't understand why these speakers can't acknowledge that we need to take up the plant-based low-carb diet. Yes, I understand he enjoys the taste of animal products, but you get the same benefits eating low-carb, plant-based, without the pollution of the environment from raising livestock.

This fellow still needs another follow up to his video's until he fully realizes that lightly processed whole wheat, pasta, grains, and potatoes are not the enemy, it is what humans are meant to eat and be digested as the body should and store them as it should, peoples consumption of processed sugar has amplified throughout the years and that is what needs to be cut out.   38. I was diagnosed with epilepsy 12 mths ago at 59years of age. As I had no intentions of being drugged out from pharmaceuticals. I went on a mission to find a cure. I had put on weight from the age of 55. I was not tested for diabetes, insulin resistance or any nutritional deficiencies. Hence I have returned to nutritional keto diet and intermittent fasting and have been seizure free for several months. No medical professional is at all aware of this and only insist on giving me pharmaceuticals. I am refused my drivers license because of not following the current ignorance by medical professionals. I have lost excess weight, my blood sugars are stable, my memory is improving and I feel great with no sign of epilepsy. I realise it may take years to reverse insulin resistance and have my body stay in Ketosis but I’d rather loose the sugar in my diet than my brain!

  39. Thank you! I took a baby aspirin for 1 month, it caused severe burning pain in my left thigh muscle. My Total cholesterol has been 250 +/-20 over the past 30 years. I've been pressured by my docs to take a statin and tried Lipitor 20 years ago, it caused me severe pain so I stopped taking it after 30 days! I'm on the Keto diet now, all my blood markers are now great except LDL (195) and I don't care about LDL. I've lost 20 lbs in 4 months on Keto. My CAC score was done last month, it's a 0 @ 59 years old. I'm confident that my risk of heart disease or stroke is low. Don't take statins!

  44. The longest lived people on this planet eat little saturated fat and not much meat (the Blue Zone folks and that includes the Japanese). The more meat and saturated fat a population eats the worse their health and shorter their life span. There has never been a study that ("Despite the well-established health benefits of diets rich in cholesterol and saturated fat,)" showed any health benefits of saturated fat. At best the researchers weren't sure one way or the other. But then anyone who wants to believe this nonsense can go right ahead and eat all the saturated fat and meat they want. I'm sure they'll live a fulfilling but short life and the last ten years of that life will be crowded with various pills and miserable. You can get away with almost murder when it comes to diet when you're young and middle aged, but once old all that excess will come back to bite you hard.

  45. Oddly enough, the only diet I’m aware of, that has been clinically proven to not just stop but Reverse heart disease has been the esslyton’s low oil whole plant based diet.

    As it turns out the French mis-reported heart disease and attributed it to alcoholism and they are in fact much worse than the previous reported. And the rates of cvd is rising due to the more western diet patterns.

    The French also tend to walk everywhere. Many people don’t even own cars or if they do they only use them to drive long distances, sit to the Gas cost being over $7 per gallon. Unlike Americans who don’t even walk to the mailbox or school.

  46. I was told my cholesterol was high and Lipitor 10 mg was prescribed. After a week of 10 mg of Lipitor I was taking twelve Tylenol a day for muscle pain and later the doctor said take half of the Lipitor. Well, I quit the Lipitor after three months of pain no matter how much I consumed of the statin. I now have diabetes and cough a lot. This one prescription ruined my life style.

  47. i was put on Crestor (at the insistence of my doctor) approximately two years ago. I took the tablets for about 4 months, and suffered many side effects. The most notable was that I was in huge muscle pain. I was unable to bend over without my muscles spasming. My c- reactive protein (Muscle enzymes) reading was sky high., The doctor just said that there was nothing wrong with me and we should monitor the high muscle enzyme readings to see what happend. Well, this didn't work for me, so I stopped taking the crestor. Now almost two years later and after a whole year of monthly Osteo treatments I am starting to be able to regain my muscle functions without spasms continually. My doctor then admitted that he had also taken the crestor and he could not move and had to get off them. I was pissed off, because why didn't my doctor tell me about the side effects of this horrendous drug. No, the symptoms do not stop when you stop taking the drugs, they continue on. I say, don't take any drugs ( my doctor told me to expect, now that I am approaching 60, to be taking a whole cocktail of drugs daily!!!) – No way, I only take allopurinol, as I have not seen that it has any adverse complications and I do not want another gout attack – It is just too painful. Our bodies were not designed to operated with the need of drugs, so don't take them. They are only being pushed on you to make money for the Big Pharm companies. Your doctor unfortunately is just following the direction and orders of Big Pharm. Your doctor actually believes the stuff they are telling you, which is the sad part. We need to spread the word, however it is amazing how many small minded people there are out there. i told my snooker partner about this today and he actually got very angry at me, because "how dare I profess to question the medical; fraternity", Who do I think I am anyway to do this?

  54. I suspect that the conclusion about platelets suffers from the same mistake as the conclusion about cholesterol. It could be that platelet count increases as a response to whatever is causing the heart problems, i.e., they might both be caused by a third thing we haven't pinned down yet.

  56. Tremendous work, Dr! First saw you around five years ago and I quickly changed my diet. I eventually evolved to a combination Paleo/Mediterranean/Ketogenic diet and over that period lost over 60 lbs of fat, reduced my BMI from 33 to 23, eliminated my high blood pressure and all meds! My cholesterol remains at 260 but now I understand the function of cholesterol and how it works for my body. I now incorporate fasting one day per week around 36 hours and twice a year incorporate a 96 hour fast for the purpose of inducing Metabolic Autophagy for a host of medical benefits for the body. Thank you, Dr for your information as you were my original inspiration to where I am today…HEALTHY!

  57. I grew up in the Midwest being fed fat, dairy, bread, sugars, fat, dairy, bread, sugars, with sparing amount of vegetables (non-corn) and fruits. Always being an athlete, I had been very active up and including today. But as I aged I started to experience diabetes symptoms, coronary issues. I love sugar/bread, but after trying to blame protein, fat, lack of veggies… I finally after much self experimenting realized that it was all due to:
    Too much dairy
    Too much protein
    Not enough whole food, plant based eating
    BUT mostly due to sugars and refined flour products (homemade or not)
    Six months later, huge difference, BMI melting away, energy level like 30 years ago, weight management good, no indigestion, no sugar highs/lows, blood pressure drop from 135/90 to 115/70.
    We have been poisoned by the sugar and manufactured food industries.

  58. Is there a bibliography? I'd love to read through the reports Dr Diamond is presenting in summary.
    Also, given the disclaimer on the adverts shown to medical doctors (the this means… 2% vs…3%) would indicate that a large proporton of these doctors are innumerate as regards statistics. I'd suggest medical schools add satastical analysis (minimally, something like 'How to Lie With Statistics' )to their base curriculum. A prerequisite to 'evidence based medicine' is being able to understand the evidence.

  59. Found the Diamond/Ravniskof paper on PubMed: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25672965 from the Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology. The full text is behind a paywall – but being PubMed, your doctor probably has access. Maybe ask them to read it. If you're on good terms, ask for a copy yourself. If you're not at all versed in statistics, have a look at "How to Lie with Statistics", which is written for kids (I first encountered it in the 5th grade), but IMO a very easy read for anyone – and will leave you better equipped to see through statistical frauds.
