Dissecting A Frog w/ Mayim Bialik

We are hanging out
with Mayim Bialik. – Mm-hmm.
– And we have decided
to dissect a frog together, because, um, you can
teach science. – You know science?
– You’ve done that? I do, I have done that. Yeah, and, um,
we’re gonna learn – at the feet of a master.
– ( laughs ) – By– by dissecting a frog.
– I think that’s slightly
overstated, but– and, we– this is
the frog we have. We didn’t get
a real frog because, if we had a real frog
on this show, we would just be forced to eat it,
because that’s basically, that what happens
on this show. – ( laughs )
– If you put something
in front of us – we have to start consuming it.
– Eventually, we will eat it. – So, and also you’re
a vegan,
– Yeah! So, we just, like,
we’ll go plastic frog. – Thank you. Appreciate it.
– This is, this is– You can learn a lot
from a plastic frog. – Yeah. Well, let’s find out
just what we can.
– What do you have? – I have this.
– A vision of– ooh. Yeah, that’s convenient. – It’s a pointer.
– Are you gonna hit us
with that, – or point things out?
– No, I’m gonna– point things out. – Okay, frog and frog.
– Frog and frog. Okay, are we
ready to get started? – Yeah.
– Oh, yeah. – Okay, let’s get started.
– I’ve got a whole kit here
with sharp things. – Yes, you do.
– Yes, finally!
Sharp things again! – That’s… that’s nice.
– I don’t know if we’ll need
super sharp things, but– Link doesn’t know that
those are rubber. Okay, I’m gonna put
this down. Okay. First thing
we need to do– Is name him. – Okay. ( laughs )
– This is… Makes it a little bit harder
to then cut him open,
but go ahead. – This is Frandy.
– ( laughs ) It’s Randy but with
an F because he’s
a frog. – Frandy and…
– Mine is named Charles. – And Charles.
– That’s my name, you jerk. – Yeah.
– ( laughter ) Is this some sort of
voodoo thing that you’re
gonna do here? Well, maybe. – ( laughs )
– My middle name is Link and I
didn’t make up Link. There’s people that
always think my
name is Charles. – You don’t have to
defend yourself.
– I don’t want to get into it. – Don’t defend yourself.
– I’m also not short. – ( laughter )
– I’m six feet tall. – Okay let’s get into this.
– Right. – That’s true.
– He’s very not short,
though… – Right, right.
– is the problem – Exactly, yeah.
– He is the problem. – This is true.
– Yes. All right, please turn
Frandy and Charles over. This is their ventral side. Okay. Link: Look at that,
made in China. – Right, like all frogs.
– ( laughter ) First, we’re gonna look
a little bit at the, um, external anatomy of
Frandy and Charles. Uh-huh. Can you determine
the sex of Frandy
and Charles? ( laughs ) Um, female.
Definitely. Wha– why–
why do you say that? – No penis.
– No frenis. Is what they call it
on a frog. So, interestingly, you won’t– Don’t tell me
it’s on the inside. Don’t tell me they’ve got
an internal penis. You won’t see it
on the outside. This opening… – What a bummer for a frog.
– I don’t really like touching
it with my finger. even though it’s not real. This opening is called
the cloaca. – Okay.
– Oh, that’s where everything
everything comes out. That– everything goes
in and out. – Yes.
– Do you want me
to make it bigger? – What? No!
– ( laughter ) – All right.
– That’s what that thing
is for. Now… so that’s the–
that’s the cloaca. So, the way that we–
there are external, um, ways to sometimes determine
if it’s a male or a female. – You ask it.
– It– – Or you just–
– You sniff it. – No, it usually has to do
with the musculature.
– Okay. Males have different muscles. Males are generally smaller
than females. Um, we can’t really tell
about Frandy and Charles, but you can tell
on the inside if it’s a boy or a girl. Sometimes there’s eggs.
We’ll get to that in a minute. Let’s, let’s get in there. – Do you know if–
– I really wanna get in there. Okay, so hold on one second.
One more thing. Um, ah.
One more thing that’s
on our like general when you dissect a frog. Please find the mouth
and eyes. – This is gonna be difficult.
– Good. Ding, ding, ding, ding. Eyes.
I found it. – Now, great.
– I don’t why it’s on the list,
but it’s a thing. – Okay.
– Oh, dear. – I found the tongue.
– Oh! Man… Oh, gosh. I don’t, okay, well,
let’s cut the mouth open. – Cut the mouth open?
– Well, there’s– it’s hinged. So for this, you’d probably,
you usually would use a scalpel. – That’s sharp.
– I have a very sharp
scalpel here. Why are you holding it
like that? It’s pinned down. Last time I was trusted
with a sharp thing, – Oh, there we go,
oh, got it!
– Whoa! Okay. – Popped it.
– Great. – Okay.
– Look at that gross,
gross– Let’s not– okay,
we don’t use words like
gross when we dissect… – interesting,
– Oh, that’s interesting. – Look at that throaty.
– Exactly. Can I see… Can you see teeth, tongue,
or esophagus in there? – Uh…
– I can see a dotted thing, looks like a hand painted
toothpick. I think that’s where the tongue
is going to attach ’cause it’s
a muscle. – ( laughs )
– I think I got a toothless
frog, it must be an old one. Let’s see.
Well there’s no teeth
in this one. I don’t think they
have teeth. – ( laughs )
– Little ones. Next. We would like to lift
and cut through the muscles
and the breast bones, so, we’re gonna remove
the panel as it were– Oh, okay.
Just like that. Is that how it works
on a real frog? – Not at all.
– Pops right off like the hood
of an Oldsmobile. No, ( chuckles )
usually on a real frog you’d make more of a–
kind of a– a T-shape. – Yeah.
– And pin the flaps. – How are kids supposed
to learn anything?
– ( laughs ) Kids are gonna be
going up to frogs
and just, ( makes popping sound )
and, “Nothing’s happening,
Mom.” ( both making
popping noises ) – Okay.
– There’s a lot of
blackness in here. Yeah, there is a lot
blackness in there. – Frog’s been eating licorice.
– This is normal– This is normally the time
that you would be able to tell if it was a male or female. There are usually egg sacks and they’re quite prominent. – Are they black.
– No, that– that’s not
the egg sacks. – What is the blackness.
– Um, that’s the liver,
I believe. Okay, let me pop
that off. I’m not gonna use
the knife for a while because you’re scared
of it. – Okay, so.
– Know thyself. Well, what do you think
is here with the– whoops, excuse me. What do you think’s
here at the top? – That’s a heart.
– That is the heart. – I win.
– That is the heart. So, you can, um,
take off the liver. is what I’m assuming
we’re gonna do next. – Link: All right.
– Rhett: Golly, I think this
thing’s got cirrhosis. Link: Remove the licorice patch. Mayim: ( laughs ) It’s not
a licorice– Oh, wow, the heart
came off with it. Oh, dear.
( laughs ) Hold on.
Why do they have to
have such a big liver. Wait for it. I don’t know,
hold on. I think that’s
a testicle. That’s not the testicle. Hold on. Well, these are
the intestines obviously. – Yeah.
– Wait for it. Hmm. Interesting,
just like when you dissect
a real frog, it looks nothing like
the diagram. – Hm.
– I got everything. Oh, you just took
it all out. – Mm-hmm.
– Okay, great. – So, now–
– Now the hard part
is putting it back. And then breathing
life into it. Put it all on the side. Okay, once you took
everything out we can see those are the kidneys. Well, dang, I haven’t
taken everything out. Well, it’s pretty easy. – Kidneys are in there.
– Uh-huh. That’s all the vasculature. This is a stomach.
The bladder’s at the bottom. Here’s the–
here’s the stomach. – That looks stomachy.
– It looks like it can be
a human stomach. – Well, yeah. It’s a–
you know, it’s a chordate.
– It’s a bean. – It’s a chordate.
– It’s a chordate,
of course. Mayim:
Um, the bladder is down
by the cloaca. It serves as the receptacle
for liquid waste before it is passed through
the cloaca. – I love that part.
– Uh, the remaining two
removal parts – are fat bodies. Mm.
– Fat bodies? – Mm.
– Fat bodies? – Fat bodies.
– This is a fat body. I have a feeling that’s
a fat body. I wonder if they
eat that. – Um.
– Like, people who eat… – stuff from frogs.
– So this is just like
insulation for the organs. It’s extra fat that
they accumulate and that’s
also one of the ways that you can between males
and females, ’cause they have different
fat distribution. – With–
– This also, probably the thing
that we should eat because let’s just
face it… – Uh.
– now that I see it
in front of me, – I kinda wanna eat it.
– No. – No!
– Well I feel like we’ve
created a bowl, you know? – It’s like a, it’s like a–
– What? No! Just kinda get your water
and then right out the cloaca. – ( laughter )
– Oh, my God! Does it coming out there?
Can you suck on it
hard enough? I’m giving it all
I’ve got, Captain. It’s not a real cloaca,
it’s not functional. I’m just gonna have
to get in there. ( slurping ) I think– I think
we’re done here. All right, man,
we learned a lot, Mayim. Man, I learned
so much. – ( laughter )
– All right, kids, drink
out of your frogs. They’re gonna take
my doctorate back. That’s what’s gonna happen. They’re gonna take away
my PhD. I’ve also eaten
a worm’s anus. – ( laughter )

a woman’s heart. Okay, thanks to Mayim

  1. This reminds me of my first time dissecting a rat and the quote that I remember it byโ€ฆ โ€˜what are you poking at????โ€™

  2. she's never coming back because link just opened up about all his insecurities and showed he is a danger to all around him and also has no common sense. love hi

  3. Itโ€™s 12:01. I need to be asleep but instead I just watched two grown men drink water out of empty frog dissection models.

  4. who else would watch the show if rhetts name was rhett and charles name was charles like i love you link. i love you any name. not in a wierd way lmfao

  5. Nobody:
Nobody at all in the whole universe:
    Link: "I'm also not short"
Link:"I've also eaten a worms anus"

  6. โ€œThere are ways to determine if itโ€™s male or femaleโ€
    โ€œYou ask itโ€
    ๐Ÿ˜‚ Link is so pure

  7. Mayim is such a treasure. So beautiful, so well rounded, and just a breath of fresh air. Wow, what a lady <3

  8. Imagine teaching a whole class full of kids reacting like Rhett and Link while dissecting a frog. The teacher better have a sense of humor like Mayim while trying to control all of that.
