Muscle Analytics Brings New Insights to Athletes | The Tech Race

Welcome to The Tech Race. (THE TECH RACE) What is an athlete’s
true physical state before competing? This
muscle analysis reveals all. (MUSCLE ANALYSIS) Prior to every
important competition it is crucial to know an
athlete’s true physical state. This data can help coaches to tailor training sessions
according to their needs. By putting athletes through
tests such as tensiomyography, dynavision and densitometry, coaches can achieve
a deeper understanding of their condition and detect asymmetries
that help anticipate injuries. The Spanish
Rhythmic Gymnastic team carried out these tests
just two months before achieving silver
at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. It’s difficult to understand
our physical state. We can have a feeling. One day we can feel more tired,
and another day, better. Any part of our body
can hurt because in the world of elite sport
there’s always pain. (SPAIN) (TOLEDO) (UNIVERSITY OF
CASTILLA LA MANCHA) At the University of
Castilla La Mancha in Toledo, the Spanish gymnastics team and artistic ice-skater
Javier Raya are ready to undergo
four specific tests in preparation
for the Olympic Games. These tests are needed to know the athlete’s condition
60 days before a competition. Without these tests everything would be
more complicated and dangerous. The first test, called Dexa,
indicates the amount of muscle, fat and water
contained within the body. (DUAL-ENERGY X-RAY
ABSORPTIOMETRY) There are many advantages
in obtaining data that can help us
prevent injuries. It’s very valuable information
to know that an athlete is already on amber
and about to turn red. The next step focuses on the hand-eye coordination
of athletes, as well as reaction speed
and field of vision – all essential to achieving the most complicated
of choreographies. Any athlete wants to arrive
at the competition in the best state possible,
no matter what. Tensiomyography can be applied
in training optimisation to avoid the negative effects
of muscle asymmetry and asynchrony
on athletes’ speed, explosiveness,
endurance and flexibility. The information tells me how the muscle is
and what strategy to work on so that these muscles
are in optimal condition at the Olympic Games. The amount of hours
we’re training won’t vary up to two weeks prior to
going to the Olympic Games. Finally, the athletes undergo
the countermovement jump test, allowing coaches to see their
levels of explosive force. With the countermovement
jump test we can measure vertical force, velocity,
jump height and power. Rhythmic gymnastics requires
a lot of mental training because the moment
we are competing we have to do a
two-and-a-half-minute exercise with no space to fix
any mistake we make. Rhythmic gymnastics combines elements of dance,
ballet and gymnastics. As a competitive discipline,
this sport evolved in the 1940s
in the Soviet Union. The Olympic Games
Los Angeles 1984 were the first to include an individual
all-around competition. Group competition
was not incorporated until Atlanta 1996. (OLYMPIC GAMES ATLANTA 1996) But during the Olympic Games not everything comes down
to the condition of the body. The mind also plays
a crucial role. I think of competitive stress
as the level of anxiety that occurs
during the competition due to the fact
that we risk it all in one or two minutes
and a half. The physical preparation
doesn’t determine the performance of an athlete. Some athletes’ training
isn’t exhaustive but it’s the right amount
for their sport. So you don’t only need
strong muscles, but you also need
a lot of intelligence. As technology
continues to develop, will mind function
