Treating Knee Problems with Therapy

Treating Knee Problems with Therapy

Obviously we want to get to the treatments we want to let people know that there are ways that you can deal with these issues and feel better and the number one question is do patients always require surgery to take care of these issues it sounds like the answer is no which is great news so just tell us about that. That’s an important question especially with meniscus tears one of the things that we see with meniscus there’s a very good opportunity as a physical therapist to come in and intervene after a meniscal tear has been diagnosed or or suspected so a lot of times we see the patient come in after seeing the orthopedic surgeon they’ve undergone imaging a diagnosis has been confirmed as damage in the meniscus the good thing is conservative therapy should always be the first line of treatment and I think it’s the correct approach a lot of the research coming out these days is actually very interesting there’s been some research in the last few years stating that at the end they’ve done follow-up research where someone had surgery and someone had conservative treatment like physical therapy and they went ahead and and kind of saw what the results were after a follow-up period of three years and the functional outcome scores are the function of that patient is there’s not a huge difference so that’s you know being there’s been a bit of a stir with that from a personal opinion I see a lot of patients come in with meniscal tears and I have the ability and we have the ability to have the patient come in get the swelling down re strengthen all the knee support musculature around the knee and have them slowly but progressively get back to all the things that they were enjoying before the meniscus tears.
